Day/night blinds
Day/night blinds
Alternating sheer and solid bands on a single roller — the complex-living answer for a lounge that faces the street.
A day/night blind is one roller carrying two layers of banded fabric. Roll it a few centimetres and the solid bands line up with each other: closed, private, quiet. Roll it back and the bands offset, so you are looking through two sheer strips — light comes in and you can see out, but the room is not on display.
That in-between state is the whole point, and it is why these are so popular in Rivonia townhouses. A great many lounges here look straight onto a shared driveway, a visitors’ parking bay or a neighbouring unit five metres away. Curtains solve it by removing the light. A day/night blind lets you keep the afternoon and lose the fishbowl.
Fabrics run from soft filtering weaves through to a semi-blockout banding that closes the room down properly for a television or an afternoon nap. They are a genuinely good-looking blind: no cords hanging in the room, a slim cassette across the top, and a clean uniform face to the outside world.
Two honest limits. They are not a blockout — even the heaviest banding lets a soft glow through the sheer strips, so a bedroom that must be dark wants a blockout roller. And on very wide sliders the fabric weight starts to work against you, which is where verticals or panels take over.
The practical detail
How we specify it here
Small decisions that decide whether you like the blind in two years’ time, not just on installation day.
- Cassette headbox — hides the double roll and gives a tidy line across a row of complex windows
- Band alignment — set on installation so “closed” really is closed, not almost
- Fabric weight — lighter weaves for filtered light, semi-blockout banding where the room needs to go properly dim
- Chain or motor — a chain with a wall tensioner as standard; a motor where the window is high or the blind wide
- Street appearance — one backing colour across the elevation so the outside face stays uniform
Not sure which fabric or which room? That is exactly the conversation the free measure is for — samples held against your own light beat any swatch on a screen.
Questions
Asked most often
Straight answers, including where the answer is “it depends on the room”.
Is a day/night blind a blockout?
No. Even with the solid bands aligned, the sheer strips let a soft glow through. For a bedroom that must be dark, a blockout roller is the right product — and the two look perfectly at home in the same house.
How wide can they go?
Wider than most people expect, but there is a point where the fabric weight makes the blind heavy to operate and prone to sagging. On a very wide slider we would rather split it into two blinds, motorise it, or recommend verticals. The measure decides that.
Are they hard to clean?
No — a light vacuum with a brush head, or a wipe with a barely damp cloth on the solid bands. Avoid soaking them; the banding does not love water.
