Venetian blinds
Horizontal slats you tilt rather than only raise — the most controllable blind in the range, and the one that solves a neighbour’s window five metres away.
Everything a venetian does well comes from one thing: the slats tilt. Instead of choosing between light and privacy, you angle the slats a few degrees and get both — the room stays bright, and the sightline from the unit opposite runs into the back of a slat. In a complex where the neighbouring window is a short walk away, that is worth more than any fabric.
Aluminium slats are thin, springy and completely indifferent to steam and splashes, which makes them the sensible pick for kitchens, bathrooms, sculleries and laundries. They are also the budget-friendly end of the range and come in enough finishes to disappear into a wall or stand deliberately against it.
Timber slats are wider, warmer and heavier, with tape ladders instead of bare cords. In a lounge, a dining room or a study they read as furniture rather than window hardware. What they do not enjoy is moisture — a timber venetian in a shower room will eventually cup and warp, so we will steer you to aluminium there rather than sell you the pretty one.
Both are made to your opening, and both suit the repeating window schedule of a townhouse: measure once, fit the same slat and the same tilt through the whole unit, and the elevation reads as one considered decision.

The practical detail
How we specify it here
Small decisions that decide whether you like the blind in two years’ time, not just on installation day.
- Slat width — narrower slats for small openings and wet rooms, wider slats where the window is generous and the room formal
- Tilt wand over cord — a wand is tidier and safer in a family home; cords, where used, are tensioned to the wall as standard
- Aluminium for moisture — kitchens, bathrooms and sculleries — timber is the wrong material there and we will say so
- Inside the reveal — keeps the slat stack neat at the top and the blind clear of handles and stays
- Repairs — bent slats and tired tilt mechanisms can often be repaired rather than replaced — ask before you throw the blind out
Not sure which fabric or which room? That is exactly the conversation the free measure is for — samples held against your own light beat any swatch on a screen.
Questions
Asked most often
Straight answers, including where the answer is “it depends on the room”.
Aluminium or timber for a kitchen?
Aluminium, every time. Steam, cooking grease and the odd splash are exactly the conditions timber dislikes, and an aluminium slat wipes clean without fuss.
Do venetians collect dust?
They gather some, like every horizontal surface in a Johannesburg spring. A soft duster run along the slats with them tilted closed takes a couple of minutes per blind, and that is genuinely all the maintenance they need.
Can you match the slat colour through the whole unit?
Yes, and in a complex that is usually the right instinct — one slat colour inside, one uniform face outside. We record the specification so a later addition matches what is already up.
